STOP Errors and Device Drivers, What's the Connection?!?
Blue screen of death (BSOD) errors, are the most critical errors that the Windows operating system can come across. Blue screen errors are kernel level errors and when you see them, they are often accompanied by a STOP error code, (e.g., 0x0000007e, 0x00000024, 0x0000000a, etc.), which indicates the type of error.
Q: What is the most common cause of STOP code errors?
A: Computer hardware problems.
Q: And what causes computer hardware problems?
A: Mostly, these are due to missing, obsolete, or incompatible device drivers.
If your computer has drivers that do not suit your devices (e.g., printer, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and everything else installed or connected to your PC) Windows cannot 'communicate' properly with the device and so it produces a STOP error.
As such, the easiest way to try and fix a STOP error problem is to update your system's device drivers. This guarantees that driver bugs are fixed, and that all your hardware has the most updated and most appropriate driver.

About STOP Error Codes
Every blue screen you encounter shows a stop error code that gives an idea on what the problem is all about. You must discontinue Windows from rebooting when a STOP error is shown so you have the time to fully jot down the error. (Sometimes though, Windows will not go beyond the blue screen so you'll have plenty of time to write down the stop error code.)
With the stop error code and the filename of the driver or module affected, this will give you a clue as to what is causing the BSOD.
If Windows proceeds with rebooting, you can still try and find out what caused the blue screen of death by viewing the Windows system event log or debugging the memory dump that Windows made when the hardware problem happened.
Following are just a few of the blue screen errors that directly pertain to driver problems.
STOP Error 0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
Error Code 0x24 means a problem occurred in ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS drives.
STOP code 0x00000024 may also display "NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM" on the same STOP message.
STOP Error 0x0000009F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
Error Code 0x9F means that the driver is in an inconsistent or invalid power state. STOP code 0x0000009F may also display
"DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE" on the same STOP message.
STOP Error 0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Error Code 0xA means that Microsoft Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.
STOP code 0x0000000A may also display "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" on the same STOP message.
STOP Error 0x00000002: DEVICE_QUEUE_NOT_BUSY
Error Code 0x2 is not very common. STOP code 0x00000002 may also display "DEVICE_QUEUE_NOT_BUSY" on the same STOP message.
STOP Error 0x00000036: DEVICE_REFERENCE_COUNT_NOT_ZERO
Error Code 0x36 means that a driver attempted to delete a device object that still had a positive reference count.
STOP code 0x00000036 may also display "DEVICE_REFERENCE_COUNT_NOT_ZERO" on the same STOP message.
There are literally hundreds of stop error codes that may be shown as the reason for your blue screen of death. Not surprising really as we have many devices installed and connected to our computers. However, with the most updated and most appropriate drivers, you're already one step ahead of the rest when it comes to preventing BSODs.
